IMMORTAL PLASTIQUE — Bahrani, Herzog Give Voice to LDPE

by Samantha Anne Scott

Ramin Bahrani’s new short film, Plastic Bag, revisions tropes within the existential immortal canon. Thankfully, in Bahrani’s immortality tale, the audience isn’t subjected to any sparkly teenage heartthrob vamps. But Bahrani’s film and its protagonist, a plastic shopping bag, gracefully address humanity’s vampiric relationship with petroleum and the natural world.

Created for the ITVS Futurestates series, Plastic Bag chronicles the epic journey of a plastic bag’s love for its maker, its travels amongst beautiful beasts, and, ultimately, its inexorable attraction to the low-density polyethylene holy land, the Pacific Trash Vortex. Scored by Sigur Ros’ Kjartan Sveinsson and voiced by Werner Herzog, Plastic Bag is 18 minutes of cinema that aims to alter your response to an everyday question — Paper or plastic?
