TOO MUCH PUSSY – Émilie Jouvet’s X-Rated Road Movie

by JC Gonzo

French pornographer Émilie Jouvet crashed into the scene in 2006 with her break-out hit POUR UNE NUIT (One Night Stand), winner of The Feminist Porn Award for Sexiest Dyke Movie and First Prize of the Lesbian Jury at the Berlin Porn Film Festival, amongst others.

Jouvet is a D-I-Y porn auteur of the highest order. She is the director, the editor, the videographer, the actress, the art director, the producer, and so on. Don’t expect amateur work, however. Jouvet’s porn is of a conceptual nature, aimed to do more than simply satisfy the viewer. Jouvet is an educator.

What made POUR UNE NUIT hotter than the rest was the thought-process behind its fabrication. On the DVD, you’re treated with a making-of that interviews each and every star (all of whom were Jouvet’s friends) who volunteered the do the project. These are real women, real queers to be specific, and the rawest of sex.

The raunchy sex that graces Jouvet’s flashy, over-saturated style was commanded by the actresses on screen. Not only did the stars chose who they wanted to fuck, but how they wanted to fuck. They aimed to give a more true offering of how they felt lesbian sex should be represented.

Jouvet follows young Parisian women through neon clubs, back alleys, and trashed apartments with her digital video camcorder. Bright colors and glossy blacks grace the stars who range from FTM punks to classy femme fatales. Jouvet melds the scripted narrative with documentary flourishes, which why is it not surprising that her newest 98-minute offering is a tour-diary–of the XXX kind, of course.

Besides a few short films of the explicit nature, some of which snagged multiple awards, Jouvet had been quiet on the forefront of features. After the release and success of POUR UNE NUIT, her and seven friends embarked on a queercore performance art tour called “The QueerXShow.”

Luckily for us not in Europe, she had her camcorder along for the ride. Thus comes TOO MUCH PUSSY: Feminist Sluts in the QueerXShow, a “sex-positive road movie” that travels across France and Germany with her posse of performance artists delivering their own version of feminism. They bring sexuality to the forefront, live and breathing, visceral and inescapable, right in front of your eyes. Jouvet further crosses the lines between porn, erotism, art, and activism with the live-shows that challenge reserved notions.

The rambunctious troupe includes Emilie Jouvet, Wendy Delorme, Judy Minx, Madison Young, Sadie Lune, Mad Kate and DJ Metzgerei. Their professions include, but are not limited to, porn-actresses, authors, activists, performance artists, sex-educators, and musicians. Jouvet presents to us a sisterhood of empowered sexual expression, pleasure-activists that were, thankfully, documented. Her signature inclusion of underground queercore music (such as Sexy Sushi, Scream Club, and an assortment of French riot-grrrl bands) pump up the soundtrack.

While this documentary is a departure from the narrative style of POUR UNE NUIT and her highly conceptual shorts, one can notice Jouvet’s similar interest in the city lights, the trashy glamour, and fast-living of girls who not only command their space, but demand it.

As one of the stars of TOO MUCH PUSSY, Madison Young, states, “The way that I’m able to infiltrate the more mainstream porn industry is by having authentic sex and having orgasms the way that I would have them and fucking the way that I would fuck and communicating with that person and connecting with them, breathing with them, looking them in the eyes, having real sex in front of the camera. Because even if I don’t have control over the way that the product is marketed, I do have control over the behind-the-scenes, the answers that I give people as to why I am doing this, and the way that I’m fucking.”

The film is on a screening tour, about to make a stop in Canada’s Vancouver Queer Film Festival.
