Finnish sculptor Pekka Jylhä may be renowned for his political monuments, but his enigmatic sculptures that combine elements such as taxidermied animals, glass, metal, light, fire, water, and motion are visceral explorations of the existential. Harnessing darkness and light, shadow and illumination, Jylhä’s sculptures invoke whimsy and naïveté as evocatively as they conjure knowledge and dread.
Scroll down to peruse some of Jylhä’s sculptures and, then, visit his website to explore his entire body of work. While you’re there, take advantage of the artist’s generous nature and download high-resolution images, perhaps for a desktop background or screensaver. It’s always useful to be reminded that slow and steady wins the race, but, sometimes, the lingering question is whether the race is even a worthwhile undertaking. Whatever you decide, Jylhä’s sculptures will prove charming, haunting objects of meditation.
