Last month, Michael Blasenstein and Michael Iacovone were detained and banned for life from any Smithsonian Institution facility, including the National Portrait Gallery, for showing David Wojnarowicz’s banned video “A Fire in my Belly” on iPads at the entrance of the “Hide/Seek” GLBT exhibit, from which Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution Wayne Clough removed the piece earlier this year. The two activists will now be returning to the Smithsonian Institution with the proper paperwork for their protest and an entirely different approach. Parking a trailer on the 700 block of F Street NW in two parking spaces outside the southern entrance, they will be opening their self-describe “Museum of Censored Art” this Thursday, and will be personally manning it, along with their volunteers, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day until the “Hide/Seek” exhibit closes on Feb. 13. Not only will they be showing the banned video, but they “… will also have exhibits detailing the how the censorship happened, examining the roles of the pressure groups as well as the Smithsonian,” says Blasenstein.
“We haven’t said anything to NPG,” said Iacovone, “but I suspect they’re going to find out real soon.”
