It seems that fashion blogging is running out of ideas – how many times can one watch the same formula Someone Dressed In Certain Clothes On A Certain Background and still stay interested? Maxim Pioneer, a photographer from Moscow, has found a simple way of escaping boredom: add a rabbit mask and a bottle of beer. Repeat daily.
The background rarely changes: it’s either a white wall in Pioneer’s apartment, stair landing in the block or one of the typically post-Soviet housing estates – never-ending rhythms of alike, grey panel buildings. The self-portraits of Maxim, raw and snapshot-style, always depict him wearing a bunny mask and holding a bottle of beer or some other liquor. The alcohol is an inevitable element of every self-portrait. „I love alcohol. I drink everyday, everything and everywhere”, Pioneer admits honestly and unpretentiously. What changes is the outfit.
Day after day, Pioneer captures his usual routine, with only minor modifications depending on the yearly rhythm of events: on the Earth Day, the photo is all black due to lights turned off, while on Valentine’s Day Maxim shares a drink with his girlfriend. The whole series depicts a monotonous at first glance, but actually fulfilled and serene life of a guy who, according to his own words, likes „cats, alcohol, women, starships and oceans.”
Apart from the Drunkard Rabbit, Maxim Pioneer shoots portraits, fashion and nudes; his style sometimes seems influenced by indie melancholy reminding of Ivan Vyrypaev’s film works, sometimes by kinky playfulness in vein of Terry Richardson.
