SWEET SUBMERSION — Martynka Wawrzyniak’s Chocolate

by Samantha Anne Carrillo

Martynka Wawrzyniak works as an editor at Rizzoli by day but, by proverbial night, she creates as a photographer and performance artist. Born in Poland and raised in New Zealand, Wawrzyniak now calls the East Village home and shares her hearth with her iconoclastic shutterbug husband Richard Kern. In her phenomenal 2010 performance piece, “Chocolate,” Wawrzyniak enlisted her spouse to drown her in chocolate syrup. The resulting 9-minute video provides a simultaneously discomfiting and thrilling viewing experience.

“It was an incredibly intense experience,” she says in an interview with T Magazine. “I had been on a juice cleanse and the chocolate hit me like a rush — I never eat sugar — only for art! I forgot to wear earplugs and had chocolate-clogged sinuses for days — very painful!”
